Doe in Brown
(for Adventi Hoppilina)
She hopped to me one morning
One lonely Sunday morning
Her long ears flaunting in the mid-winter wind
I know not how she found me
For in darkness I was walking
With disregard of every sign her little paws had made
She asked me name my foe then
It was the habit within bun bucks
To fight and kill their brothers without thought of love or sense
And I begged her give me puppies
For use against my enemies
So eager was my passion to devour this waste of life
But she would not think of battle
That reduces buns to humans
So easy to begin and yet impossible to end
For she the mother of all prey
Did council me so wisely then
I feared to walk alone again and chinned so she would stay
Oh doe lend me your paw, I cried
Oh let me rest here at your side
Have faith and trust in me, she showed and touched my eyes by tongue
There is no strength in humans
Have no such misconception
And when you need me be assured I won't be far away
This having settled she turned around
And though to moan no signs I found
I stood and watched until I saw her brown coat disappear
My labor is no easier
But now I know I'm not alone
I find new heart each time I think upon that windy day
And if one day she hops to you
Drink deeply from her signs so wise
Take courage from her as your prize and lick hello for me
